Safely regain movement, flexibility, strength and wellbeing and naturally aid your postnatal recovery with yoga and relaxation. Meet other mums and babies, and have the opportunity to discuss practical and emotional matters by sharing and gaining support from a friendly group. Gently move, realign, restrengthen and nurture your body after pregnancy and birth. Enjoy stretching, toning and practicing relaxation, whilst including, bonding and having fun with your baby through touch, movement and songs.

Yoga can help soothe aches, pains and tension that may come with caring for your baby, and help you and your baby feel calm, positive and revitalised. Parents can support babies physical and emotional development by doing yoga with them, and find their own feeling of peace, in a relaxed, friendly environment.

In the group you will be invited to practice around 30- 40 minutes of gentle yoga and relaxation (or however long you are able to join in with – please do feed, comfort and rest with your baby whenever needed), with the remainder of the session time to have tea, coffee and chat.

Classes are suitable for parents with babies from approximately 6 weeks to 10 months ( or until your baby is fully on the move).

About postnatal mum and baby yoga

My class is a friendly, welcoming environment open to everyone with babies aged 3 months to crawling. Previous yoga experience is not necessary. The classes are made up of gentle yoga movements, techniques and relaxation exercises for both you and your baby to do in a relaxed, sociable and calming environment. All moves are optional and you can chose which moves you and your baby would like to join in with. The class is usually made up of about 70% adults postnatal yoga and 30% baby yoga. We always try and interact with and include babies whenever possible during the postnatal adults yoga, so that the babies feel secure, content, included and have fun during the session.

Why do postnatal mum and baby yoga?

The postnatal adult yoga that we do in the class can help you to gently move, stretch, increase flexibility and safely recover and realign your body after pregnancy and birth, whilst encouraging emotional wellbeing for you and your baby.

In the class we enjoy stretching in the body in a restorative way to relieve physical and emotional tension and stress that may come with caring for a young baby. We also focus on safely regaining strength in the pelvic floor and core areas that are weakened during pregnancy and birth.  During the classes we focus on techniques that help realign and nurture the body after having a baby.

Postnatal yoga can help you feel calm as well as revitalised, and relieve discomforts that come with looking after your new baby and recovering from pregnancy and birth.  In the class we practice breathing exercises that help with postnatal recovery and relaxation. We aim to calm our minds and improve emotional wellbeing, whilst bonding and having fun with our babies through touch, movement and singing.

The relaxation exercises we do in the class can help you and your baby to be a calm and content with enhanced wellbeing. Mum and baby postnatal yoga can also be helpful for parents with fatigue, stress, postnatal depression and anxiety.

The class is a lovely, reassuring place to be within a community of other mums and babies, and gain a support network and friendships if you wish.

The baby yoga sections of the class help babies to have a sense of security and wellbeing and prepare them for future physical and emotional milestones such as laughing, rolling, crawling, walking and talking. This is done through loving interaction, songs and playful moves. Baby yoga is also a great way to increase bonding, encourage calmness in your baby and promote natural sleep.

A baby yoga class is also a place for babies to build on their important social development, beginning to gain social awareness by seeing, hearing and connecting with other babies and adults.

You are welcome to feed, change and comfort your baby at any point during the class. If your baby cries in the class that is completely ok! You’re invited to take the class at your own pace and rest when you or your baby needs to.  You might not be able to join in with some parts of the class when you are caring for your baby, but you will still gain a lot of value from simply getting to the session and being in the room with others. Please miss out anything that feels uncomfortable for you, or your baby.
